Halifax West High School

October 2nd - Fire Alarm and Evacuation

Hello Students, Parents and Guardians.

Halifax West High School is continuing to investigate the incident from Tuesday afternoon.  What we have determined so far is that a flare device of some type was lit in a school stairwell and filled the stairwell with smoke.  This triggered the fire alarm at the class change from lunch and led to the evacuation of the school.  Halifax Fire and Police responded to the alarm and worked with school staff to air out the building and return it to a usable state.  Students and staff re-entered the building at approximately 13:55 after we received clearance from Halifax Fire.

We feel it is important to keep you informed about situations that impact our daily operation and interrupt learning.

The school is working with Halifax Regional Police to determine who is responsible for this incident. If you have further information we would appreciate it being passed on to police or to the Principal of the school, Mr. Simony, at 902-457-8900 ext 5601297 or at tsimony@hrce.ca.

If you feel your child may need support at the school following today’s incident, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their guidance counsellor or vice-principal.

Thank you for your support.
